Health & Safety Policy — Commercial Waste Welwyn
Commercial Waste Welwyn is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety across all aspects of our commercial rubbish service in the area. This policy sets out the framework we follow to protect employees, contractors, visitors and the public while providing professional rubbish collection and commercial waste disposal services. We recognise that safe operations are integral to reliable service delivery and the long-term success of our waste management activities.The objectives of this policy are to ensure that risks are assessed and controlled, that everyone receives appropriate training, and that safe systems of work are maintained. Our approach covers operational collection routes, transfer and storage of commercial waste, vehicle safety, manual handling and the safe handling of potentially hazardous materials. Prevention of injury and ill-health is a priority, and responsibilities are clearly defined to achieve that outcome.

Responsibilities and Accountability
The management team retains overall responsibility for health and safety and will allocate sufficient resources to implement this policy. Day-to-day responsibilities are delegated to operational supervisors, drivers and site staff who must ensure that safe working procedures are carried out. All employees are required to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others affected by their actions.Risk Assessment and Control Measures
We carry out regular risk assessments for all tasks associated with commercial waste collection and rubbish handling. Identified hazards are evaluated and appropriate control measures are implemented to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable. Controls include engineering measures, administrative procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Control measures implemented include:
- Vehicle safety: daily checks, secure loading procedures and safe reversing policies;
- Manual handling: mechanical aids, team handling and safe lifting training;
- Segregation of waste: procedures to separate recyclable materials, hazardous waste and general commercial refuse;
- Containment and storage: secure containers and designated storage areas to prevent spillage and environmental contamination;
- Incident controls: spill kits, clear emergency routes and access for emergency services.
These controls are reviewed following incidents, near-misses or changes to operations. Where new risks are introduced, the control hierarchy guides our response: eliminate the hazard where possible, substitute or isolate, implement engineering controls, adopt safe systems of work and finally provide PPE as a last line of defense.
Training, Competence and Communication
We invest in training to ensure all staff are competent to perform their roles safely. Training covers vehicle operation, manual handling, safe loading and unloading of commercial bins, identification and management of hazardous wastes and the correct use of PPE. Refresher training is provided regularly and after any significant change in equipment or process.
Operational procedures and safe systems are communicated through written procedures, toolbox talks and pre-shift briefings. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that team members understand and follow safe work instructions and that any issues raised by staff are acted upon promptly. We encourage a proactive safety culture where concerns can be reported without fear of reprisal.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Equipment Maintenance
PPE appropriate to tasks is provided and must be worn whenever required. This may include high-visibility clothing, gloves, steel-toe boots, eye protection and respiratory protection where dust or fumes are present. All vehicles, lifting equipment and tools are subject to regular inspection and maintenance schedules to ensure continued safe operation. Defective equipment is removed from service immediately until repaired or replaced.
Emergency Preparedness and Incident Management
Emergency procedures are in place to manage fires, spills, traffic incidents and medical emergencies. Employees receive instruction on these procedures and emergency drills are conducted periodically. All incidents and near-misses are recorded, investigated and used to drive improvements in our safety management system. We adopt a no-blame approach to reporting so that lessons are learned and recurrence is prevented.Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
The effectiveness of this policy is monitored through audits, inspections and performance indicators such as incident rates and corrective action completion. Regular reviews ensure that our health and safety management remains aligned with operational changes and best practice. Senior management will review this policy at least annually and whenever significant changes occur, and all revisions will be communicated to staff.Commercial Waste Welwyn expects all staff, contractors and partners to cooperate with this policy. By working together to maintain safe operations, we protect people, the environment and the service standards our commercial customers rely on. Compliance with statutory requirements and industry standards is a baseline; our goal is to foster a culture of continuous improvement and excellent safety performance across our rubbish company service area.
